Laparoscopic surgery

It is an examination of the intra-abdominal and pelvic organs with a special endoscope (laparoscope) that enters the abdomen through a small incision just below the navel. The laparoscope has a light source to illuminate the inside of the abdomen. Doctors usually perform this operation under general anesthesia.

The laparoscope optical lenses are connected to a video camera so that the surgeon can see the findings on a screen. There is the possibility of taking photos or recording the entire operation on video or DVD.

We can perform a lot of surgical procedures laparoscopically, thus bypassing the need to open the abdomen (called a laparotomy). We may need to make two or three extra incisions in the abdomen to insert the instruments with which we will perform the operation.

It has advantages over conventional surgery because we perform it through small holes (usually 3-4) of size 5-10 mm. Thus the aesthetic result is much better, the recovery is faster, the post-operative pain is minimal and the creation of adhesions is rare. The use of a magnifying glass camera and the thin non-traumatic tools makes the method ideal for controlling and treating anatomical infertility problems. It requires surgical skill and it usually takes longer.

The highly experienced gynecological surgeons of the institute perform the laparoscopic process. Our surgeons have specialized abroad in this kind operation.

The gynecological procedures that can be done laparoscopically are:

  • Sterilization
  • Removal of the fallopian tube, or part of it, due to ectopic pregnancy
  • Ovary removal
  • Ovarian cyst removal
  • Fibroids removal
  • Uterus removal (total hysterectomy) with or without ovaries and fallopian tubes removal
  • Removal of the uterus and cervix (total hysterectomy) with or without ovaries and fallopian tubes removal
  • Treatment of endometriosis, when it involves endometrial cysts removal, removal of endometrial tissue or evaporation of endometrial lesions.
  • Adhesions
  • Fallopian tube surgery to treat infertilInvestigation to check the potency of the Fallopian tubes (by injecting a suitable pigment)
