Definition

The term infertility describes the absence of conception after 12 months of unprotected targeted intercourse in women under 35 and after 6-8 months in women over 35. Infertility affects 8-10% of the population.

What are the causes?

Infertility in a couple can be due to problems in the female, male, or both reproductive system. We estimate that 30% is due to female factors, 25-30% to male factors and the remaining 30-40% to a combination of the two. In some cases, despite extensive investigations, we cannot identify the causes (idiopathic infertility). In any case, what we must not forget is that the most important cause of a couple’s infertility is the woman’s age.

It is essential that the investigation into the causes of infertility is systematic, carried out by specialists in medically assisted procreation and always guided by the clinical characteristics and medical data of each couple.

We need an immediate or shorter investigation in cases when the woman:

  • Is over 36 years old.
  • Has diagnosed with a menstrual disorder (amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea, polycystic ovary syndrome).

  • Suffers from inflammatory pelvic disease.
  • Has ultrasound findings related to sterility (eg, fibroids, polyps, endometrial cysts).
  • Has a serious medical history (eg cancer, diabetes, thyroid disease, sexually transmitted diseases).

Similarly, we need a brief investigation in cases where the man:

  • Has suffered from cryptorchidism or have had severe injuries or surgery in the genital area.
  • Had chemotherapy / radiotherapy in the past
  • Has an obvious problem such as testicular cancer

The couple must undergo a series of tests that will lead to the diagnosis of infertility.
Then, depending on the test results, the duration of infertility and the age of the patients, we decide together how to proceed.
